Career and Personal Planning (CPP)

CPP (Career and Personal Planning) is a “class” that integrates core competencies into student learning, fostering personal growth and responsibility. Through introspection, goal setting, planning, and accountability, students are empowered to excel academically, maintain physical fitness, prioritize their health and well-being.

Teachers collaborate closely with students and parents, providing guidance and support throughout the journey of goal setting, planning, and learning. To ensure personalized attention, each student is paired with a teacher upon joining the program and maintains that relationship until graduation. This arrangement enables regular check-ins with students, as teachers connect with each student every two weeks.

By implementing the CPP, we cultivate a holistic learning environment that nurtures individual potential and encourages continuous progress in various aspects of student life.

Physical Education and Studio Arts

Inter-A student have great opportunities to practice their leadership in both Physical Education (PE) and Studio Arts (Starts).

Inter-A students participate in PE, including Active Living and Health, throughout the school year. Students with extensive training and experience in sports or leisure activities will often help their peers to discover and practice new skills. Teachers will support advanced students running “classes” for their peers with increasing independence.

Students with training, interest, and a developing technical proficiency in the arts are given opportunities to share their skills and learning with their peers. Over time, students become capable of conducting a class or even a series of classes exploring technique and genre. Many of the visual arts, movement, dance, drama, and stagecraft are common areas of study in Inter-A’s studio Arts program.

Service Learning

Participation in Community Service is a key value of the Inter-A program. Students are encouraged to complete their volunteer hours on a regular basis. Activities like peer tutoring, school and community beautification, community clean up, library work, recycling and waste reduction, supervising children’s activities, and assisting teachers are just a few examples of how students in grades 8 and 9 complete their required hours. Senior students often become involved with community organizations working to improve homelessness, food insecurity, or environmental issues. Participating in coaching, youth councils, and charities are among the many other ways that students may earn their service hours.

Field Studies

Field studies and excursions are much more common in Inter-A than in a traditional high school. Science classes will use outdoor experience to support learning in Environmental and Life science. Our arts and literature program often includes trips to cultural sites and performances. Cultural expeditions and leadership activities will also take us out of the class for a day or longer. Some students elect to participant in a two-week French language exchange within Canada. For many students, one of the highlights of their time in Inter-A is an international excursion that we undertake every two years.
